For Ophthalmologists
The OSSA Right to Sight Trust encourages ophthalmologists to support the Second Sight Project by including some cataract surgeries for financially needy patients on their private cataract surgery lists.
The Trust’s ability to provide access to consumables relies on the support of financial donors and/or sponsoring medical device companies (when legislation is favourable). To ensure that we can respond efficiently in both environments, the Trust uses the following two models:
  • Reimbursement model (when donor funding is available): Reimbursements for intra-ocular lenses and other consumables to the value of R5 000 per surgery.
  • Sponsorship model (when legislation is favourable):  Access to sponsored intra-ocular lenses and other consumables for surgeries.
Both models work through the Ophthalmology Management Group (OMG) cataract registry. Intra-ocular lenses and consumables that qualify for reimbursement or are being sponsored by a medical device company can be found on the OMG cataract registry. This can be accessed via
Only one of the models is active at any given time. To check which model is in use, click on the medical device company’s name on the OMG cataract registry
