The Second Sight Project is a blindness prevention program that aims to assist people who have been on a public hospital waiting list for an extended period to access basic cataract surgery. Clinically complex patients are not considered for Second Sight surgery.
To ensure that as many people as possible can benefit through the project, only the patient’s worst affected eye qualifies for Second Sight surgery.  Surgical responsibility for the remaining eye reverts to the state.
Other criteria to be considered for Second Sight surgery include:
  • Evidence of significant visual impairment due to cataracts.
  • Evidence that the patient has tried to access surgery through the public health system (i.e.  a government hospital card).
  • Evidence that the patient is financially disadvantaged (i.e. a South African Social Security Agency card).
